Srinagar-born director and producer who studied at the Film and Television Institute of India and made waves early with the 1976 short Murder At Monkey Hill, which bagged a National Award. By the late 1970s, he was already getting Academy Award nominations, establishing himself as someone who took cinema seriously.
He built his reputation on crime dramas and historical epics like Parinda and 1942: A Love Story, but proved his real box-office magic as a producer rather than director. His Vinod Chopra Films banner became a hitmaker factory: the Munna Bhai comedies, the phenomenon that was 3 Idiots, PK’s audacious satire, and the glossy Sanju biography. He’s collected five National Film Awards and ten Filmfare Awards along the way.
Recent work includes directing 12th Fail, a low-budget biographical drama that won critical acclaim. Chopra represents the producer-auteur model that works in Hindi cinema, more comfortable bankrolling others’ visions than consistently directing, yet retaining final creative control. His taste in scripts has remained reliable across four decades.
