Alia Bhatt walked into her first film, Student of the Year, as exactly the kind of glossy star-kid launch that critics love to be sniffy about, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt, cast in a Karan Johar confection. The sniffiness did not survive contact with what she did next.

Highway showed there was a real actor under the debutante, and then a genuinely bold run followed: the drug-ravaged migrant in Udta Punjab, the spy in Raazi, the brothel matriarch in Gangubai Kathiawadi that won her a National Award. She has collected Filmfare trophies at a pace that has made the argument about nepotism versus talent mostly moot, because the talent kept answering it.

She now produces under her own banner, has crossed into Hollywood, and is married to Ranbir Kapoor, which makes any joint outing a paparazzi event in its own right. Solo, she is no less of a draw.
