Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor carries the heaviest surname in Hindi cinema, great-grandson of Prithviraj, grandson of Raj, son of Rishi and Neetu, and for a while the interesting question was whether the pedigree would turn out to be a gift or a weight. The answer, on the strength of the performances, was mostly gift.

Rockstar and Barfi are the films the admirers point to, the roles where he disappeared into damage and whimsy respectively, while Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani made him the reigning romantic lead of his moment. Sanju, his turn as Sanjay Dutt, was a box-office monster, and Animal in 2023 was a genuine phenomenon, colossally successful and fiercely argued about in equal measure.

Married to Alia Bhatt and a father now, he remains famously reluctant about the whole business of being photographed, which of course only sharpens the pack’s interest. When he surfaces, the lenses are ready.
