Amitabh Bachchan is an Indian actor and television host born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad, and arguably the most towering figure in the history of Hindi cinema. After early struggles he became a phenomenon in the 1970s as the “angry young man”, with Zanjeer (1973), Deewaar (1975) and the epic Sholay (1975) rewriting what a Hindi film hero could be.
His stardom spanned decades and reinvented itself more than once, from 1980s superstardom through a mid-career slump to a celebrated second act as host of Kaun Banega Crorepati and a character actor of real depth, winning a National Award for Piku (2015). Recent blockbusters Brahmastra (2022) and Kalki 2898 AD (2024) rank among the biggest hits he has ever been part of.
He married actress Jaya Bhaduri in 1973, and their children Abhishek and Shweta keep the Bachchan name central to the industry.
