Horror and thrillers are the genres Hindi cinema likes to make money from and then quietly disown, which makes Bipasha Basu’s career worth a second look. She was born in Delhi in 1979 and raised in Kolkata, and she arrived the way a lot of that generation did, through fashion modelling rather than film school.
Ajnabee in 2001 was the debut, and it won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Raaz followed in 2002 and earned a Best Actress nomination, which is not a thing horror leads are usually given. Then the erotic thriller Jism in 2003, and after that two films that were the highest-grossing releases of their respective years, No Entry in 2005 and Dhoom 2 in 2006. That is a run most actors of any genre would take.
The press settled on “scream queen” and “sex symbol” and largely stopped there, which says more about the press than the filmography. She has since stepped back from acting, and the paparazzi interest never went anywhere.
