For a certain generation, Imtiaz Ali more or less defined what a Hindi film romance was allowed to look like. Born in 1971, he came up through television and theatre before Socha Na Tha in 2005, a debut that flopped and has since been quietly reclaimed as a cult favourite.
Then came Jab We Met in 2007, which is the film most people mean when they say his name. It won him a Filmfare for dialogue and his first Best Director nomination, and it turned Kareena Kapoor’s Geet into a character people still quote. Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar and Tamasha followed, each one worrying at the same theme, love as the thing that either finds you or breaks you, usually both.
He is not to everyone’s taste, and he knows it. Amar Singh Chamkila in 2024 was proof there is plenty left in the tank.
