Ranveer Singh had no film family to open doors, which in hindsight explains a lot about the sheer voltage he brings to being a star. He talked his way into an audition for Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010, walked off with the film, and has spent every year since behaving as though the camera might switch off if he stops performing for a second.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali films are the spine of the serious case for him: the doomed lover of Ram-Leela, the Maratha warrior of Bajirao Mastani, the terrifying Khilji of Padmaavat. Then Gully Boy, where he played a Mumbai street rapper and reminded everyone the loudest man in the room could also do restraint.
