No Bollywood biography reads quite like Sanjay Dutt’s, the son of the beloved stars Sunil Dutt and Nargis, whose life off screen, addiction, the arms case arising from the 1993 Mumbai blasts, years in and out of prison, has been dramatic enough that they eventually made a hit film out of it. Ranbir Kapoor played him in Sanju.
The on-screen career is real and substantial underneath all that: the gangster tragedy of Vaastav, the villainy of Khalnayak, and then the wholly unexpected sweetness of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., which reinvented him as a lovable goon for a whole new generation.
