Vishal Bhardwaj

Vishal Bhardwaj started out writing music, and the fact that he still composes his own scores tells you how completely he controls the mood of his films. His signature project, an unofficial Shakespeare trilogy transplanted to Indian soil, remains one of the more ambitious things anyone in Hindi cinema has attempted.

Maqbool set Macbeth among Mumbai’s gangsters, Omkara made Othello a tale of caste and politics in the Hindi heartland, and Haider relocated Hamlet to insurgency-era Kashmir, each pairing literary nerve with real commercial actors. Kaminey and 7 Khoon Maaf showed the same taste for darkness and black comedy. He has collected a shelf of National Awards along the way.

Married to the singer Rekha Bhardwaj, whose voice defines much of his soundtrack work, he is a quieter presence than his casts. Our cameras value the occasional sighting.
