Shah Rukh Khan

There is a version of Bollywood history where Shah Rukh Khan is a mid-tier television actor from Delhi who never quite cracked film, and then there is the one that actually happened. He arrived in Hindi cinema as an outsider with no family in the business, played a couple of memorable villains, and then spent the mid-nineties turning the outstretched arms and the stammered romantic line into a national default setting.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 is the film that fixed him in place, though the range underneath the King Khan branding is easy to forget: the alcoholic in Devdas, the hockey coach in Chak De India, the father in My Name Is Khan. He is as much a businessman as an actor now, with a production house and an IPL team to his name.

After a quiet patch he came roaring back in 2023 with Pathaan and Jawan, both of which the box office treated as events rather than releases. The paparazzi treat any glimpse of him the same way.
